Blade’s MCU Revival Looks Toast — Why Mahershala Ali May Never Don the Cape

So… what happened to Blade?

Back in 2019 at Comic-Con, Marvel teased a shiny new Blade movie and handed the role to Mahershala Ali. Fans were hyped — a big-name actor, the MCU stamp of approval, and vampires on the menu. Fast-forward a few years and that buzz has mostly fizzled.

Directors came and went

The project hit turbulence when two directors departed — one in September 2022 and another in June 2024. Losing filmmakers like that is the cinematic equivalent of a game of telephone gone wrong: the story keeps changing and momentum evaporates.

Feige’s awkward update

While promoting the upcoming Spider-Man movie, Marvel boss Kevin Feige sounded unusually downbeat when the subject of Blade came up. He admitted he felt like a failure over the whole situation — and that sentiment pretty much kills the suspense. Bottom line: Mahershala Ali’s Blade in the MCU looks increasingly unlikely, and any comeback would be a long shot.

But the MCU isn’t collapsing

The Black Panther reboot might be sidelined, but the larger MCU train is still chugging. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due July 29, Avengers: Doomsday is holding firm on December 16, and Secret Wars is slated for December 15, 2027. Feige also said he isn’t planning a wholesale reset after Secret Wars, though the next X‑Men movie (2028) will feature new actors in those mutant roles.

The takeaway for fans

If you were holding out for Mahershala Ali to punch vampires in a Marvel suit, temper your hopes. Blade as we were promised seems stalled, maybe dead for now. But the MCU will keep rolling with other big releases — so there’s plenty to look forward to, even if this particular night-hunter never makes it to screen.
